What is the Teen Board?
Local high school students from the Triangle volunteer their time on the Teen Board to support Note in the Pocket’s mission. Our Teen Board leaders complete a variety of projects to gain hands on leadership development experience. Mentors will provide them with insight into the functions and demands of running a nonprofit organization, help them to develop and hone their leadership skills, and provide guidance and support in their efforts to implement projects that will improve the lives of children throughout our community.
What is the goal of the program?
The purpose of the Teen Board is to:
- Encourage students who have a passion and heart for serving to become more active in local community service.
- Develop community leaders.
- Support Note in the Pocket’s mission and program to meet the needs of Wake and Durham County students.
What is required of participants?
Teen Board members will be expected to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours over the summer (June-August) and host a summer clothing drive. The Teen Board hosts monthly required meetings (Sept-May) at our Volunteer Center in Raleigh. At these meetings, students will hear presentations from community leaders and have the chance to work with their Mentor group on a specific project.
Members are required to complete a total of 12 volunteer hours, 6 in the fall and 6 in the Spring. Members can volunteer both on and off-site and participate in fundraising projects throughout the year, culminating in the spring with team participation in the Note in the Pocket Socks & Undie 5K Rundie.

Our hope is that the Teen Board members will carry these skills with them in the future as they continue to serve and improve our community.
The Note in the Pocket Teen Board has impacted me greatly in the last year. I have been exposed to business strategies, ins and outs of nonprofits, and seen and been a part of the work behind the scenes to ensure the success and impact of the community. This has allowed me to have my own aspirations for my future career and learned more about business as a whole. It also has been a privilege to help the community and it has impacted my desire and love for philanthropy. Being able to see changes in your community, see the nonprofit grow, help with donations, and more has been a great experience. It has developed a love for philanthropy, grown a desire from within, and sparked a need to create changes.
